Small Business Marketing Update - Scary TV Spot Appearing

One of the scariest things I have seen is the television commercial for Cars.Com. Not only does it look creepy, I am mystified by what it is supposed to say. While the graphic attracts your attention, you tend to miss the message, which is actually sung by the face in the woman?s hair. I rate it high for Halloween but low for effectiveness.?

Scalia's Advice For Law Students - Business Insider

Justice Antonin Scalia isn't shy about sharing his uncensored opinions, even if they're incredibly controversial. After all, he has a lifetime appointment.

His speech at the University of Wyoming's law school last week was no exception, the Casper Star-Tribune reports.

A law student asked him for the "single best piece of advice" he has for law students, and he told her they should skip the "frill courses."

"Take the bread and butter courses. Do not take 'law and women,' do not take 'law and poverty,' do not take 'law and anything,'" Scalia said, explaining that many professors simply "teach their hobbies."

Scalia isn't the only justice to offer up advice to aspiring lawyers.

John Roberts recently implied that people shouldn't go to law school simply because they're "not good at math and can't think of anything else to do."

Best Practices for Mobile Retail Websites - Small Business ...

With the growing popularity of mobile devices equipped with instant internet access, retailers need to adapt to keep up. Making your retail site mobile-accessible allows you to reach millions of potential customers whose primary means of accessing the internet is through their mobile devices. If your site?isn?t?mobile-ready, you could be missing out on potential customers and sales.

There are a number of methods for creating a mobile website. Which option is right for you depends upon your retail specific needs, how much you?re willing to spend, and how well you avoid potential pitfalls.

Mobile Website Options

Knowing your needs, especially for browsing and purchasing, can help you determine which development option is best for you.

  • What are the specific needs of your retail site? Some sites can be converted to be mobile-friendly, depending on their size and how they are built.
  • How much are you willing to spend? Some sites, even though they function well on a desktop computer, don?t lend themselves to being converted to mobile. In that case, you may want to outsource the work to a reputable web design company with experience in building and optimizing product heavy mobile sites.

Ease of Use

You want your mobile site to be easy to use, both for you and for your customers. Whether your mobile site simply offers the bare essentials about your company or provides a plethora of products available for immediate purchase, it has to be easy to navigate.

  • Customers prefer to browse products that are displayed catalog style. If your mobile site looks cluttered or disorganized, this will reduce its effectiveness as a marketing strategy.
  • Near field communications (NFC) technology makes it easier than ever for customers to make purchases from mobile retailers. Consider adding this feature to your mobile site.

Potential Pitfalls

Having a mobile site is a great way to reach new customers and advertise your product, but if not executed properly it can also be detrimental to your business. High-speed wireless internet access has accustomed users to fast page load times. If your mobile site takes more than 3 seconds to load, potential customers will ?surf? somewhere else.

  • Test your mobile site on a variety of devices to ensure that it is compatible with various platforms and both older and newer phones. Nothing drives a customer away faster than glitches, broken links, and failed code.
  • Beware of object and java script, which drains both bandwidth and batteries and can interfere with customers? ability to receive calls while browsing.

Don?t forget to set up analytics software for your mobile site. Analytics software helps you optimize your site for turning high traffic into effective purchases.

Whether you develop your mobile site with a plugin, downloadable tool, conversion software, or outside web design company, it can directly increase your business? online presence and sales. Consider your site?s needs and your company?s budget before deciding on an option. No matter what option you choose, be sure that your site is easy for customers to use and navigate.

Now That Windows 8 And The Surface Tablet Have Launched, Microsoft Turns Its Focus To Developers

build_microsoft_2012_logoMicrosoft's heavy schedule of launches and events this month, including the Windows 8 and Surface events in New York last week and its Windows Phone 8 event in San Francisco on Monday, is set to reach its end with the Build developer conference on the company's huge Redmond, WA campus starting on Tuesday. In some way, this is almost symbolic, given that the future of the Windows 8 platform is now really in the hands of the developers.

Contrasting Profiles in Hope: Obama vs. Romney | Psychology Today

I have made a career of studying hope. As a clinical psychologist most of my focus has been on the role of hope in relation to anxiety and depression, or the healing power of hope when confronting a serious illness.

As a result of Barack Obama?s 2008 campaign of ?hope and change? I have increasingly been asked to comment on the role of hope in presidential politics. In 2010, I decided to do some research on hope and the presidency to see what I might learn. I am revisiting the topic in this blog as we approach the 2012 election and Romney pits his own message of ?optimism? and ?change? against that of the president.

The major study conducted by my research team focused on the last ten elected presidents, from Eisenhower to Obama, five Republicans and five Democrats. We wanted to find out how much and what kind of hope these men offered in their first (or only) inaugural address. More recently, we decided to supplement our research by looking at the amount and kind of hope expressed in Mitt Romney?s 2003 inaugural address when he became governor of Massachusetts.

Presidential inaugural speeches were studied years ago by David Winter at the University of Michigan to explore the motives of U.S. presidents (he studied power, achievement, and affiliation). Winter was able to relate the motive profiles of each president to their behavior in office. Could ?hope profiles? yield the same or even higher levels of predictive power?

In my book, Hope in the age of anxiety, I explain that hope is based on four great needs: attachment (trust and openness), mastery (empowerment and purpose), survival (liberation and self-regulation) and spirituality (empowerment, connection, and assurance via a higher power).

Using with this integrative perspective, my research team (Kristen Wallin, Daniel Graham, and Sarah Stevenson) spent six months in 2010 developing a scoring system to measure the levels and kinds of hope contained in a sample of text. In other words, we created scoring rules to identify themes of hopeful mastery, attachment, survival, and spirituality. As part of the process we broke down each of these four dimensions of hope into the following more basic sub-units.

?

Mastery

Plans: The president promises successful planning and goal setting.

Collaboration: The president commits to collaborate and/or encourages a spirit of teamwork.

Higher Goals: The president calls for the pursuit of higher goals, ideals or transcendent values.

Attachment

Trust: The president and administration will be trustworthy and honest.

Continued presence: The president promises to be inclusive and engaged with the public.

Openness: The president invites public feedback; the administration will be transparent.

Survival

Protection/liberation: The president promises to protect or liberate.

Resilience: The president notes the resilience of the American people.

Fear reduction: The president uses words to calm the public or assuage fears.

Spirituality

Spiritual inspiration: The president invokes a higher power to empower or justify actions.

Spiritual presence: The president suggests a higher power is continually present.

Spiritual assurance: The president appeals to a higher power for protection of the nation.

?

Highlights of 2010 Findings

Obama scored highest in total hope with 32 themes. This was an interesting finding given that we were able to empirically validate Obama?s platform of hope and change via his inaugural speech. Obama also ranked first in mastery hope. This too may have been anticipated given that he was the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review. He also taught constitutional law at the University of Chicago.

Nixon ranked first in attachment. While this may appear ironic to casual observers of the presidency, more in-depth psychological studies of Nixon have unearth the strong role of frustrated attachment needs in his background.

Kennedy ranked highest in themes of survival. Obama ranked second. This is significant because we found that survival was the type of hope most strongly associated with historian?s rankings of presidential greatness. Perhaps this is because some of our greatest presidents have ushered the nation through great crises (e.g. Lincoln or FDR).

GW Bush ranked first in Spiritual hope. This was also not surprising given his documented efforts to ?integrate faith with public policy at the most practical level?, including the establishment of ?faith-based? initiatives?.

We also created ?hope profiles? for each president based on the amount of attachment, mastery, survival, and spiritual content in their speech. These profiles proved to be a good fit with the kind of policy initiatives each president undertook during their time in office.

For example, it was noted that Kennedy had the highest survival score. In particular, he relied on many themes of liberation. In his inaugural address he vowed to ?pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe, in order to assure the survival and success of liberty?. For much of his presidency, Kennedy?s focus was on liberation abroad. In the Bay of Pigs, the intent was the liberation of Cuba. In Vietnam, the aim was to curtail the perceived loss of liberty from spreading Communism. Kennedy, hesitant at first, eventually put his political resources behind the Civil Rights Movement to liberate minorities.

Ronald Reagan ranked 3rd in mastery (he was high in idealism, moderate in both mastery and collaboration). He ranked third in survival, focusing on themes of protection/liberation and resilience. Political observers pay respect to Reagan?s optimistic vision for America. His stress on personal freedom spanned both domestic and foreign policies. He championed a return to ?rugged individualism? and promised to get big government ?off our backs?. He railed against the Soviet ?evil empire?, culminating in his speech on the Berlin Wall, ?Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall?.

Romney?s Hope Profile

Earlier this month, we repeated our method of having two raters on different ends of the political spectrum score a speech sample. This time we scored Romney?s inaugural address as governor. We explored how Romney?s hope scores would compare with the past ten elected presidents. We also went back to see which of the past nine presidents were most similar to Obama.

Romney?s 20.5 themes of hope put him in 6th place, tied with GWH Bush. His 13 mastery themes put him in 2nd place, right behind Obama. His 3.5 attachment themes put him in the 8th spot. Romney?s 3 survival themes put him in a tie for 8th place with Carter and Johnson. His single spiritual reference would put him in a tie for 5th place. In summary, Romney?s hope profile consists of high mastery, low attachment, low survival, and moderate spirituality.

Obama vs. Romney: Hope for mastery

Romney?s mastery profile (high planning, high collaboration, zero higher goals) is most similar to Clinton. Neither has ever been accused of being an ideologue. Obama?s mastery score (high planning, high collaboration, high higher goals) is most similar to Reagan. Interesting both Obama and Reagan ran on explicit platforms of hope or optimism.

Obama vs. Romney: Hope for attachment

Romney?s attachment score was similar to that of GHW Bush (low to moderate trust). Obama?s was closest to Carter (high trust). Many readers will recall the night that GHW Bush looked at his watch during the presidential debate with Clinton which reinforced the stereotype of an ?out of touch? leader. Carter, despite many criticisms of his policies, has always rated high in integrity in presidential surveys. Romney has been characterized as distant and ?walled off? by fellow Republicans as well as Democrats. Obama began as a community organizer and has been both praised and criticized for his effort to ?reach across the aisle?.

Obama vs. Romney: Hope for survival

Romney?s survival score is most similar to Johnson (low protection, high resilience, zero fear reduction). Obama?s was closest to Kennedy (high protection, high resilience, moderate fear reduction). Johnson?s primary goal was to stay the course after Kennedy?s assassination. Romney?s former business associates have praised his cool, efficient handling of crises. In the final presidential debate, Romney also appeared to endorse a strategy of ?staying the course? in foreign policy. Kennedy came into power at the height of the cold war and fears of encroaching Communism. Obama came into power in the midst of a global recession and two wars against terrorism.

Ottawa, October 26, 2012 - In Canada alone, almost 2 million people are known to be living with diabetes. And around a million more have the disease but are not aware of that fact, and have not been given the tools they need to control their blood sugar and safeguard their health. The Heart Institute will be presenting the results of an innovative pilot program on October 29, at the Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Toronto, Canada.

Diabetic patients have a much greater risk of dangerous cardiovascular events, including recurrent heart attacks and development of heart failure. "Patients with diabetes account for a disproportionately high number of hospital inpatients globally. At the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, over 40 percent of all our inpatients are diagnosed with diabetes," reported Bonnie Quinlan, an Advanced Practice Nurse at the Heart Institute.

Heart Institute staff recognized that hospitalization for heart disease provides a valuable opportunity to identify patients with uncontrolled or undiagnosed diabetes and connect them with the care they needsimilar to how the Ottawa Model for Smoking Cessation uses hospitalization as a unique opportunity to help smokers quit.

In May of 2011, the Institute rolled out a pilot program to identify and manage every patient with diabetes admitted as an inpatient. The program trained 15 nurses to serve as "diabetes champions" on the wards, led by a newly hired Diabetes Nurse Specialist, Kim Twyman.

These champions in turn provided peer-to-peer training to other nurses, doctors, dietitians, and medical and surgical residents, centered around a new guideline and educational 'tool box' designed to walk staff through the steps to identifying and managing diabetes with every patient. In February 2012, this optional guideline became a mandatory medical directive. By March, the number of patients referred to the diabetes nurse specialist had doubled.

The effort paid off: for example, after implementation of the program 85 percent of patients had their doctors notified of their diabetic status compared with only 26 percent before the program. Thirty-four percent received a referral to a community diabetes management program compared to none before the program started.

And most importantly, average blood sugar levels in diabetic inpatients dropped by almost 2 points, to the target level considered reflective of adequately managed diabetes, "which is amazing," recounted Amy Charlebois, one of the program's nurse champions.

The remarkable HbA1c drop of 2% demonstrates the success and effectiveness of a diabetes management program within our tertiary in-patient environment. The development of a systematic plan to educate staff on the management of diabetes, identifying on admission those affected by diabetes , diagnosing diabetes and standardizing the treatment of diabetes within our institution and ensuring timely, seamless transition to the community for self management care of diabetes with our community partners resulted in a dramatic improvement of HbA1c .

The United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study, a large randomized study trial of intensively, managed people living with Type 2 diabetes compared to usual care showed significant benefits of A1c reduction. 43% lower risk of amputation or death from peripheral vascular disease, 37% lower risk of blindness and kidney failure, 21% lower risk of diabetes complications, 21% lower risk of death related to diabetes, 14% lower risk of heart attack and 12% lower risk of stroke with each 1% drop in A1c.

Challenges still being addressed include how to fit all the pieces of the program into patient care for brief stays, such as overnight or elective day surgery, and how to influence patients who refuse to accept an unexpected diagnosis.

"There was also the challenge of 'this is just one more piece of paper' in an already busy day, or one more thing to do,'" said Quinlan. "This barrier seemed to become less of an issue as the program gained momentum: staff felt empowered by being able to manage their patients' diabetes and felt tremendous positive feedback from patients and families who in many cases for the first time were receiving support to assist them in managing this chronic disease."

Can Pomegranate Prevent Prostate Cancer? | Food Trients

By Life Extension

Can Pomegranate Prevent Prostate Cancer?

Pomegranates?are the epitome of a super food ? for no small reason.

In fact, these bright red fruits are one of the richest sources of antioxidants known.

They?ve been shown to protect against a variety of diseases including heart disease,1?diabetes,2?and atherosclerosis.3

But the benefits of pomegranate don?t stop there. In fact, pomegranate juice may slow prostate cancer growth, according to research from UCLA.

Let?s take a look at the research.

Study Finds Pomegranate Slows Rising PSA Levels

In the study, investigators from UCLA recruited men with a prior history of?prostate cancer. They had undergone cancer surgery or radiation, but their PSA levels (a prostate tumor marker) were quickly rising. They were given 8 ounces of pomegranate juice daily for several years.

What they found was striking: The men who drank the juice had slower rising PSA levels.4Specifically, it took 54 months for their PSA levels to double rather than the average 15 months prior to drinking pomegranate juice.

This wasn?t the only human study to find positive results. A more recent one conducted in 2012 showed that pomegranate extract reduced PSA increases as well.5

The goal of prostate cancer therapy is to keep PSA levels as low as possible. And slower increases are a positive sign. But just what is it about pomegranate that makes it so beneficial? Laboratory studies may offer clues.

Pomegranate Offers Anti-Cancer Properties

The best way to attack cancer is through a multi-targeted approach. Cancerous cells work through different mechanisms to grow and spread.

That?s why it?s important to tackle different mechanisms simultaneously for the best results ? an approach which is?rarely?utilized by conventional medicine.

This is also why pomegranate looks so promising ? it attacks prostate cancer in a variety of ways:

    • Pomegranate induces?apoptosis, a process in which cancer cells die.6?Normally, your body kills cancer cells through this process. When apoptosis fails, cancer cells can reproduce uncontrollably.

?

    • Pomegranate suppresses inflammatory markers like?NF-kB?(nuclear factor-kappa B), which is associated with tumor growth.7

?

    • Pomegranate blocks?angiogenesis, the process in which tumors generate new blood vessels.8?Tumors develop their own blood supply in order to obtain nutrients for growth. Cutting their blood supply could essentially ?starve? a tumor and affect its growth.

?

  • Pomegranate stops cancer cell proliferation and invasion of cells.9?Cancer cells become more dangerous when they spread from their site of origin and it?s usually this metastasis that claims the lives of many cancer patients.

The primary benefits of pomegranate are attributed to their ellagitannin content,6?which are phytochemicals with powerful antioxidant properties. Other powerful compounds they contain include caffeic acid and luteolin.10

The Bottom Line

The goal of prostate cancer therapy is to keep PSA levels as low as possible, as rising values can indicate recurrence. To keep levels from increasing, doctors often prescribe therapies such as hormone deprivation, which can produce undesirable side effects.

Regardless, significant strides in prostate cancer research have been made within the last few decades. The five-year survival rates have increased remarkably since the 1970s4, though it still remains a top killer.

That?s why it?s important that men take a multi-modal approach in treating their disease.

The results of the UCLA study are truly remarkable and show promise for men with this condition. Although the pomegranate juice wasn?t ?a cure? per se, it?significantly?delayed PSA values without any dangerous side effects to speak of.

Not bad at all for a fruit, wouldn?t you say?

Life Extensionists are people who believe in taking advantage of documented scientific therapies to help maintain optimal health and slow aging. The medical literature contains thousands of references on the use of antioxidant vitamins, weight loss supplements, and hormones that have been shown to improve the quality and quantity of life. Life Extensionists attempt to take advantage of this scientific information to enhance their chances of living longer in good health.

Public Speaking: 5 Presentation Myths Debunked | Business ...

We all feel pressured at times to perform at work ? whether it?s to influence our company to move to a new IT system, or pitch to a potential client and win their business. When it comes to presenting, there are pressures we don?t need. Here are five public speaking myths to debunk now.

1. We need to be an extrovert to be a great presenter

Clint Eastwood, Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks. All are famous introverts, but how is this possible? It is a myth that only extroverts make great presenters. The issue in being a great presenter is not whether you are an extrovert or introvert, but on how willing you are to stand up and share your story with others. Often, those of us who are more introverted have deeper imaginations, ponder more, and think deeply. So, when we do express ourselves, the content can be riveting. If you are naturally introverted, the key is to find a way of presenting that is consistent with your natural communication style rather than try to be someone you are not. How you express yourself comfortably on a one-to-one basis could well be the best method to follow when speaking to a larger group.

2. Planning a great presentation takes considerable time

How many hours, days, weeks, years have gone into changing that font, or getting that picture to whoosh into view for your finale? Much of this is not necessary. Pareto is famous for his 80-20 rule ? the idea that, in business, 80% of the results we achieve come from 20% of the activities we do. In the world of presenting, the formula is a more extreme 98-2 rule. 2% of the effort delivers 98% of the benefit. With the right tools (such as a presentation app), you can create a presentation in minutes. The materials you create, whether this is a PowerPoint, should be simple. More and more, we are seeing great presenters who are light on text and heavy on images. Next time you present, make use of pictures and tell the story or message behind each one to your audience.

3. We should have superior knowledge to our audience

We all love to be right, but how can we be? It?s impossible to know everything in your field of work, and that?s okay. It?s important not to claim to be right when speaking if you think you could be challenged. There is nothing wrong with being questioned (in fact it can be a good thing), but you should never put yourself in a position of saying something that is incorrect or nonsense. The key is learning to let go of having ALL the answers. Focus on what you do know and admit to your audience if you there is something you don?t know. Be pleased if you hear the ?Ah but?? question from a member of the audience. Not only will this create an interactive audience but the whole group (as well as you) could benefit from new knowledge too.

4. It?s not what we say but how we say it

The myth that body language accounts for 55%, voice 38% and words 7% has already been debunked. What is interesting here is to explore which is more important ? the words or the way they are delivered? Words help us make sense of our world and share our thoughts and feelings with others. Without this framework of common understanding, we would probably still be roaming the plains and living in caves. The words ARE important ? each choice of word or phrase we use will create an internal picture for the people we are talking to. There is no doubt that body language and tone of voice can reinforce what we say but, if the words themselves do not influence or educate your audience, then you won?t achieve your business aim. Treat body language, tone and words equally. One cannot be effective without the other, but focus on getting your key words right first.

5. We need to get rid of our nerves before we present

Many of has have heard the statistic that talking in public is people?s number one fear. Not only is this feeling normal, it is good ? necessary in fact. Yes, the fear of public speaking increases our heart rate and breathing, and feeling of alertness. Why would our brain do this to us? This is what puts us into the state to perform our best. I believe it?s impossible to deliver our top game without it. The key is to welcome these feelings rather than by debilitated by them. It does take time and practice to learn to be comfortable with such nerves but it?s worth it. By being at the edge of our comfort zone ? whether through public speaking or any other feared activity ? we get a boost of adrenaline and that?s where living really begins?

These are just five myths to presenting. Let me know if there are other public speaking myths that you think should be debunked and people can overcome them.

Court refuses Planned Parenthood appeal of Texas ... - Gymrat-Fitness

AUSTIN, Texas | Thu Oct 25, 2012 8:19pm EDT

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) ? A federal appeals court declined on Thursday to reconsider a ruling that would allow Texas to withhold funding for women?s healthcare from Planned Parenthood?s clinics because the organization also performs abortions.

Texas Governor Rick Perry said after the order by the Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans that the state would immediately stop paying program participants that are affiliates of abortion providers.

?Today?s ruling affirms yet again that in Texas the Women?s Health Program has no obligation to fund Planned Parenthood and other organizations that perform or promote abortion,? the Republican governor said in a statement. ?In Texas we choose life, and we will immediately begin defunding all abortion affiliates to honor and uphold that choice.?

A three-judge panel of the appeals court ruled in August that Texas may exclude groups affiliated with abortion providers from the Women?s Health Program, which provides cancer screenings, birth control and other health services to more than 100,000 low-income Texas women.

In a filing with the court in September, Planned Parenthood asked the full court to rehear the matter, saying the rule violates its First Amendment rights to speech and association.

Planned Parenthood said on Thursday that further consideration by the full court was needed to protect women?s access to preventive health care like breast and cervical cancer screenings and birth control.

?Politics should never come between a woman and her health care, but in this decision, which conflicts with Supreme Court precedent, it appears it has,? Kenneth S. Lambrecht, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, said in a statement.

Lambrecht added that Planned Parenthood was evaluating its options but didn?t say how the group would proceed. Options include appealing to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The case could proceed to trial in U.S. district court in Austin, where a trial had been postponed in part because the appeals court was considering the matter.

OTHER FACILITIES TO ABSORB PATIENTS

The federal government, which pays for 90 percent of the $39 million-a-year program, has said it will not renew the funding because Texas decided to enforce a law that had been on the books for several years barring funding for abortion providers and affiliates.

Texas is creating its own program for the women using state funds. It is set to begin November 1.

The state?s health and human services chief said last week that the program would shut down if Planned Parenthood were allowed to continue participating.

Planned Parenthood says it does not provide abortions at clinics that participate in the program. The state objects to the family planning group?s affiliation with clinics that do provide abortions.

Planned Parenthood says it serves nearly half of the women in the program. A study released this month by the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services raised questions about whether other facilities would be able to absorb the patients now served by Planned Parenthood.

?We?ve increased the number of doctors and clinics in the program, and we?ll be ready to help any woman who needs to find a new provider,? Texas Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Dr. Kyle Janek said Thursday in a statement.

Samsung's Earnings - Business Insider

Samsung Electronics Co., the world?s biggest maker of TVs and mobile phones, reported record profit that beat analysts? estimates and forecast intensifying competition as the global economy slows.

Net income in the three months ended Sept. 30 rose 91 percent to 6.56 trillion won ($6 billion), the Suwon, South Korea-based company said in a statement today. That compares with the 6.25 trillion-won average of 27 analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg.

Operating profit from telecommunications more than doubled as Samsung?s Galaxy devices widened their lead over Apple Inc.?s iPhone. Samsung shares dropped amid concern growth in smartphone demand may have peaked after Apple reported earnings that missed estimates and Microsoft Corp. released its Surface tablet, escalating competition for mobile devices.

?The problem is the worry about the smartphone market peaking,? said Lee Jin Woo, a fund manager at Seoul-based KTB Asset Management Co. ?The question is whether tablets can offset the peak in the smartphone market, but it might take some time. Apple?s results refueled these concerns.?

Samsung fell 2.7 percent, the most in two weeks, to 1,287,000 won at the close of Seoul trading, paring gains this year to 22 percent. South Korea?s benchmark Kospi index declined 1.7 percent.

Galaxy, IPhone 5

Competition probably will increase in the fourth quarter amid a global economic slowdown, Samsung said in a statement today. The company will focus on high-value products to maintain its momentum and will try to boost sales of tablet computers with more pen-equipped models and cheaper devices, Samsung said.

?We plan to make tablets our new growth engine,? the company said in the statement.

Apple?s share of the global tablet market fell to 57 percent in the third quarter from 65 percent a year earlier, losing sales to devices running Google Inc.?s Android software, according to Strategy Analytics.

Samsung?s operating profit surged 91 percent to 8.12 trillion won from 4.25 trillion won the year before. Sales rose to 52.18 trillion won, equivalent to 19 percent of South Korea?s gross domestic product, from 41.27 trillion won a year earlier.

More than two-thirds of the earnings were generated by the telecommunications business, where operating profit jumped to 5.63 trillion won from 2.42 trillion won, the company said in the statement. That compared with the 5.42 trillion-won median of four analyst estimates compiled by Bloomberg News. Sales at the unit rose to 29.92 trillion won from 17.94 trillion won.

Record Market Share

?The mobile-phone number came out very strong,? Kim Young Chan, a Seoul-based analyst at Shinhan Investment Corp., said by phone today. ?It again confirms that there?s no real competitor out there other than Apple. The Samsung-Apple duopoly will likely continue for a while.?

Samsung shipped 56.9 million smartphones in the third quarter, giving it a record 35 percent market share, compared with 17 percent for Apple, Strategy Analytics said today. In overall handset sales, including basic types, Samsung remained the top seller, researcher IDC said separately.

Sales of the Galaxy S III surpassed 20 million units in the 100 days after its May debut, Samsung said Sept. 6. The company also is offering the Galaxy Note II phone, equipped with a pen and a larger screen than the S III, after the first version sold more than 10 million units.

Samsung?s earnings from phone sales will probably decrease in the fourth quarter, compared with the previous three-month period, as the company increases spending on marketing to maintain its sales lead, Kim said.

Apple Forecast

Apple, lagging behind only Samsung in the $219 billion global smartphone market, started selling the iPhone 5 with a bigger screen, lightweight body design and faster processor than previous models last month. On Oct. 23, the company unveiled a smaller, cheaper version of the iPad.

Cupertino, California-based Apple reported debut weekend sales of more than 5 million units for the iPhone 5, falling short of some analyst estimates after supply constraints delayed shipments. Apple forecast profit yesterday that fell short of analyst predictions because of rising costs to revamp product lines.

LG Electronics Inc. and other rivals using Android are flooding the market with high-performance devices and pushing down prices, Im Jeong Jae, a Seoul-based fund manager at Shinhan BNP Paribas Asset Management Co., said today.

?Chances are smartphone profit will go down from here,? Im said. ?It?s getting harder to differentiate with hardware, and average prices are falling.?

$1 Billion Damages

Samsung and Apple also are battling in court over patents protecting their devices, with each accusing the other of copying their intellectual property.

The companies have traded victories, with Apple winning more than $1 billion in damages Aug. 24 after a jury in San Jose, California, ruled that the South Korean company infringed six of seven patents. Apple is seeking a U.S. ban on some Galaxy products.

Separately, a U.K. court ruled that Samsung?s Galaxy tablets weren?t ?cool? enough to be confused with the iPad. Apple?s appeal was rejected, and the company had to post the ruling on its U.K. website.

Samsung is also the biggest maker of computer-memory chips. Profit at the semiconductor division fell to 1.15 trillion won from 1.59 trillion won amid a decline in global personal- computer demand. The four analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News estimated a median profit of 1.16 trillion won.

Texas Factory

The price of the benchmark DDR3 2-gigabit DRAM averaged 84 cents in the July-September period, compared with $1.08 a year earlier, according to data from Taipei-based DRAMeXchange, operator of Asia?s largest spot market for semiconductors.

During the period, global PC shipments fell 8.3 percent from a year earlier to 87.5 million, according to Gartner. IDC reported an 8.6 percent decline.

As DRAM demand slumps, Samsung is accelerating its diversification to more profitable products used in mobile devices. The company, the biggest semiconductor supplier for Apple and the exclusive manufacturer of processors powering the iPhone, said in August it will invest about $4 billion in its Texas factory to boost output of the chips in smartphones and tablet computers.

Samsung?s display business had an operating profit of 1.09 trillion won, compared with a loss of 90 billion won a year earlier. The median of the four analyst estimates was a profit of 909 billion won.

Smaller Displays

The company is benefiting from demand for displays used in mobile devices as sales of flat-screen TVs stagnate. Sales of mid- to small-sized screens probably accounted for about 60 percent of operating profit at the display business, according to estimates by Hanwha Investment & Securities Co.

The TV business had an operating profit of 430 billion won, up from 310 billion won a year earlier. Sales were 11.6 trillion won, compared with 11.4 trillion won a year earlier, the company said.

Samsung is introducing new technologies including OLED, 3-D and Internet-enabled TVs to reverse slowing industry sales. The sets using OLED, or organic light-emitting diode, technology can produce sharper and brighter images than current liquid-crystal- display models.

Zynga, Bwin.party Partner on Real-Money Gambling | Online ...

zynga-bwin.party-dealSocial games developer Zynga will team with pan-European gambling operator Bwin.party digital entertainment on a real-money UK-facing gambling business. The deal, which was announced Wednesday along with Zynga?s Q3 earnings report, will see Zynga launch a real-money poker site that will share liquidity with bwin.party?s dot-com poker operations, effectively making Zynga a PartyPoker skin. Zynga?s real-money poker offering will be ?powered by the established operating platform, software and related support of bwin.party.? In exchange for feeding its fish into the Party pool, Zynga will be provided with a suite of 180 real-money casino games, and the company is also promising the debut of a new Farmville-branded slots game. Zynga?s new service will operate using bwin.party?s Gibraltar gaming license and is set to launch in the first half of 2013.

Meanwhile, Zynga?s Q3 earnings turned out to be, well, not great, but less dire than had been feared. Revenue rose 3% to $317m, but the all-important bookings tally came in at $256m ? the worst performance in almost two years ? and average daily bookings fell 11% to $0.047. Zynga said daily active users had risen 10% over the same period last year to 60m, but that?s down sharply from 72m just three months ago. Monthly active users rose to 311m, up 37% from Q3 2011 and also up slightly from Q2 2012?s 302m. Overall, the company recorded a net loss of $52.7m, or seven cents per share, compared to net income of $12.5m in the same period last year.

Zynga also announced it would use $200m of its $1.5b cash on hand to buy back its own stock (why not, now that it?s trading at a 75% discount). The company is embarking on a cost-cutting program ? including laying off 5% of its workforce and reducing spending on advertising, data hosting and outside services ? that is expected to save them up to $20m in Q4. Before the earnings report was released, Zynga shares briefly touched $2.10, a new all-time low. Since the earnings report and the news of the new real-money gambling revenue stream, Zynga?s shares have gone on a rare upward trajectory, gaining over 10% in after-hours trading.
