Today's Consumer Remodeling Trends | Kitchen Design by ...

Bathroom and kitchen projects rank number one and two as the most work for remodelers in 2011. The number one reason for the remodeling project work, according to consumers, is to repair and/or replace old components. The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodeling Market Index (RMI) survey was conducted during the first quarter of 2012.

Replacing old components and wanting better components are the top two reasons for remodels.

The recently released data outlines the top eleven reasons for remodeling homes:

  1. Need to repair/replace old components
  2. Desire for better/newer amenities
  3. Desire/need for additional space
  4. Desire to avoid moving/buying another home
  5. Need to repair a damaged property
  6. Desire to age in place
  7. Energy efficiency/environment concerns
  8. Desire to increase value of home as investment
  9. Change in number of people living in home
  10. Prep for ordinary, non-distressed resale
  11. Prep for real estate owned (REO), short or other distressed sale

Bathroom remodeling was reported by 78% of professional remodelers as the most common job they handled in 2011. Kitchen remodeling was reported as the second most common job by 69% of the remodelers surveyed.
This new jump in remodeling is a good sign that the housing market is starting to improve. Although sluggish, the housing market has areas of activity across the country as homeowners work to improve their existing properties.

Bathroom remodels were the number one project last year, followed by kitchen remodels.

Other remodeling projects in 2011 were:

  • Window and Door Replacement ? 44%
  • Repairing Property Damage ??35%
  • Whole-house Remodeling ??35%
  • Room Additions ??33%
  • Handyman Services ??31%
  • Finished Basements ??27%
  • Roofing ??24%
  • Siding ??23%
  • Decks ??21%

There is great demand for products and services for the growing 55 and older consumer as forecast by the NAHB. The 55+ age group will continue to grow in population until the year 2019 when it will account for nearly 45% of all households.

The NAHB also noted characteristics of the 55+ group as fitter, more computer savvy and wanting to live a different lifestyle than previous generations. As proof of this, sales of investment and vacation homes for example jumped in 2011 rising above the highest level since 2005 according to the National Association of Realtors.

For the second quarter of 2012, builder confidence in the 55+ housing market for single-family homes showed improvement compared to the same period a year ago (NAHB).

As the largest demographic, the baby boomer generation still commands attention of the manufacturers and retailers. More and more ?aging in place? trends in product development and advertising as marketers try to reach this audience.

Curiosity Rover Team Shifts Back To Earth Time After Using Martian Sols

By: SPACE.com Staff
Published: 11/09/2012 08:17 AM EST on SPACE.com

The mission controllers overseeing NASA's Mars rover Curiosity are finally switching back to working on Earth time after three months of operating in sync with the Red Planet, where the Martian days last 24 hours and 39 minutes.

The team in charge of Curiosity's instruments and operations at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., had been working in shifts aligned with Martian time for the first 90 Mars days, or Sols, of the mission. Since the start of the Sol is always changing relative to Earth time, the team's start time for daily planning had to be moved a few hours later each week.

A constantly shifting schedule that includes overnight hours can produce effects similar to chronic jet lag, seriously disrupting an Earthling's 24-hour internal body clock. But NASA officials announced that mission managers were able to compress the daily planning process so that this week the team at JPL started working between 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. PST.

"People are glad to be going off Mars time," said Richard Cook, the rover's deputy project manager.

"The team has been successful in getting the duration of the daily planning process from more than 16 hours, during the initial weeks after landing, down to 12 hours. We've been getting better at operations," Cook added in a Nov. 6 statement.

In another change this week, visiting scientists who have spent some time at JPL since Curiosity's momentous landing on Aug. 5 are heading home. More than 200 non-JPL scientists who were in Pasadena to work on the mission will still participate regularly from their home institutions throughout North America and Europe, NASA officials said.

"The phase that we're completing, working together at one location, has been incredibly valuable for team-building and getting to know each other under the pressure of daily timelines," said Joy Crisp, Curiosity's deputy project scientist at JPL, in a statement. "We have reached the point where we can continue working together well without needing to have people living away from their homes."

Curiosity is set to spend at least two years on Mars to determine whether the planet could ever have had the conditions necessary to support life.

Getting Paid After Hurricane Sandy - Three Village, NY Patch

Hurricane Sandy slammed into the Northeast, destroying lives, homes and jobs. Below is some information about how to get back to work or get paid while you're trying to put your life back together.

Will you still get paid if you can?t get to work or your office or business is closed??

Employers are covered by the Federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), which defines whether an employee is entitled to be paid when a business is closed. If you fall under the status of ?exempt?, as many salaried workers do, you are entitled to be paid. If you are non-exempt, then you are not?although you should still receive a paycheck for hours that you worked prior to Sandy's arrival.

http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/fairpay/fs17g_salary.htm

http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2012/11/05/hurricane-sandy-victims-can-get-unemployment-help/

For some, Hurricane Sandy may mean more pay or a new employment opportunity.?

Under the FLSA, most non-exempt employees are entitled to overtime pay, so if you are working long hours in a non-exempt position, restoring power or clearing damaged trees, your next paycheck will be larger. And you may find some new employment opportunities. Home improvement stores may add employees in anticipation of home improvement and repair projects. You may also find more jobs in the construction, landscape and transportation industries.

http://jobs.aol.com/articles/2012/10/31/will-hurricane-sandy-boost-jobs/

You may be entitled to unemployment benefits.

Residents who are unemployed as a direct result of the storm and who live in of parts of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut that were declared federal disaster areas may be eligible to apply for unemployment assistance. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, anyone unemployed due to Hurricane Sandy is immediately eligible and can submit a claim to the Department of Labor. The criterion for collecting disaster assistance is broader than for collecting regular unemployment benefits.

Specifically, an individual can collect disaster assistance in any of the following cases:

  • You are injured in the disaster and unable to work, whether you are an employee or self-employed.
  • Your workplace is damaged or destroyed, or you cannot work because of the disaster, or you cannot get to work because you must travel through the affected area, which is impossible due to the disaster.
  • You planned to begin working but cannot because of the disaster.
  • You derived most of your income from areas affected by the disaster, and your office or business is closed or inoperable because of the disaster.

To apply for unemployment benefits or disaster unemployment assistance, those who were affected by the storm or have lost their job or income should call the Telephone Claims Center (TCC) at 1-888-209-8124, or 1-877-358-5306 if they live outside of New York state.

Make do at your old or new home office.

To get a paycheck, you may find yourself suddenly working from home or having to get more creative to be productive in your home office that lacks power. That may mean working from a friend?s house that has power or using a generator. Here are some images of the AOL editorial team working through Hurricane Sandy. As you can see, many of us are in the same boat.

Lady Antebellum Record PSA for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society

LadyAPSA
PR Newswire

Lady Antebellum have partnered with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), recording a highly personal PSA for the organization in order to help raise both awareness and funds for research.

The trio participated in this campaign since the disease hits particularly close to home, as each member has seen someone in their family diagnosed with cancer in the past two years.

?Like most people, cancer has touched someone close to each of us recently,? said Dave Haywood. ?So, it?s something that?s important to us and we?re proud to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society?s efforts to raise funds for cancer research.?

In the PSA, Hillary Scott discussed how she lost her grandfather to acute myeloid leukemia and shares a deeply personal story about how he imparted his influence on the group. ?He had this deep, booming voice, and he?d say, ?How are you and those two, long-legged boys doing?,?? the singer recalled.

Scott also shared that the Lady A started its first-ever arena tour on the very day her grandfather died, but she was able to soldier on, since she knew he wanted her to be on that stage. She even wistfully mentioned that he now has the best seat in the house.

Clearly, doing whatever they can for this cause is a priority to Lady A, since cancer has left its mark on their personal lives. They are hoping that by working to raise awareness, a cure can be discovered in their lifetimes.

Advice For Those Consumers Contemplating A Bankruptcy Filing ...

TIP! Do a check of your credit report from all the top companies who report on consumer credit after two or three months have passed following your bankruptcy. You will want to see that everything on the report states that the debts have been discharged and closed out.

Bankruptcy is serious, and should not be looked at as something that isn?t a big deal. There are many factors involved in the bankruptcy process and it is crucial that you understand them. If you want to take the next right step, simply follow that tips presented here. No matter what tough decisions you have to deal with, you can do it!

TIP! Make sure accuracy is spot on. Although you might have an attorney that fills out and files your paperwork, it?s your responsibility to check if all the information is accurate.

Visit forums online to chat with others who are also going through bankruptcy. Going through a personal bankruptcy can feel very stressful, and make you uncomfortable around friends or family members. The beauty of the Internet is that you can speak anonymously with those who share your feelings about filing and the repercussions.

Unsecured Debt

TIP! While you should trust your lawyer, you should not leave all the details to your lawyer?s discretion. Your lawyer is the one who knows about the bankruptcy laws, but it is in your best interest to find out as much about the proceedings as you can.

If you are going to be filing for bankruptcy, think about filing Chapter 13. With a regular income and unsecured debt below $250,000, Chapter 13 is probably best for you. This allows you to keep possession of your real estate and property and repay your debt through a debt plan. Typically, this goes on for roughly three to five years, and once this time has expired, your unsecured debt is eliminated. Stay mindful that should you for any reason miss even one plan payment, your whole case is going to get thrown out by the court system.

TIP! Try to stay in contact with your creditors even if you are unable to pay the full amount of your bill. It is important to get any verbal agreements with them backed up with written documentation.

Before you file, make sure you understand the laws as much as possible. Did you know that in some areas, you cannot transfer assets from yourself to another person in the year previous to filing occurring? Also, it is illegal to load up your credit cards with debt right before filing occurs.

TIP! When filling out the bankruptcy petition, it pays to be honest. Anytime you hide something from the court it can be grounds for them to dismiss the petition right away.

Before you make the decision to file for bankruptcy, be sure to study all of the applicable rules and regulations. Review your situation and see how many of your debts you can have discharged. Credit card and other kinds of debt with non-essentials are not always discharged if the debt was accrued within ninety days of filing. Always keep up with the laws your state has placed in effect.

TIP! Brush up on the latest bankruptcy regulations before you decide whether or not to file. The laws are constantly undergoing changes, so you must stay on top of them if you are going to file for personal bankruptcy correctly.

Some lawyers offer a phone number that you can give creditors when they call you about your delinquent account. All you have to do is give the creditors this number. Then, they can call this number to confirm you are actually going through bankruptcy. You should receive no more calls from them.

TIP! Take advantage of free consultations with lawyers and the ability to sift through and find the right one. Ensure that you have a meeting with a real lawyer instead of an assistant, since they can provide the best advice.

When choosing a bankruptcy lawyer, your best option is to find someone who is recommended by someone you know versus someone who you find online or in the phone book. Some companies just want to take advantage of you, so it is important that you have help from someone you trust.

TIP! List out who you owe money to. Be sure your list is complete as it will form the basis of your personal bankruptcy filing.

If you need to file for bankruptcy, consider retaining a bankruptcy lawyer. A legal professional can help quell any confusion you have about the process. Also, a lawyer can assist you with paperwork and give you the answers you are looking for.

TIP! If you can afford to pay your bills, bankruptcy is not a wise option. Although bankruptcy may feel like a simple method of getting out of your large debt, it leaves a permanent mark on your credit history for up to 10 years.

It is possible to attempt to file bankruptcy and yet be denied, so you need to have a plan B in case that happens. If you are aware of the consequences prior to the denial happening, you will be mentally prepared for what could follow, such as car or home loss.

Financial Situation

TIP! Filing a claim doesn?t always result in losing possessions. Most of the time, you retain your personal possessions.

If you are a position where you are considering bankruptcy, take a moment to reflect on how your financial situation got this bad. You should not worry about your money managing skills if you owe money because of unplanned medical expenses, but if most of your money has been spent irresponsibly, you need to look for a long-term solution to manage your finances. If you are a spend-a-holic, you should consider getting some help so you can avoid putting yourself right back into the same bad financial situation once the bankruptcy is complete.

TIP! If you think you will need to file for bankruptcy, do so as quickly as possible. If this is your only option, waiting will not make it any better.

This article outlined a few different types of personal bankruptcy. Don?t let the amount of information overwhelm you! Take some time to figure things out. You will be more likely to make beneficial and thoughtful decisions as a result

(AP) ? Oklahoma City went to Kevin Durant in the fourth quarter. Chicago was missing its best closer, so all the Bulls had to pitch in.

Durant and Co. were just too much to overcome.

The NBA scoring champion had 10 of his 24 points in the final period and the Thunder beat the Bulls 97-91 on Thursday night.

"It was one of those games you have to grind out," Durant said. "We've been through so many. We know what it takes."

Durant iced the game with an off-balance jumper off one foot with 35.1 seconds to play. He added another jumper a few seconds later and then finished off his game-ending spree with a couple of free throws.

Oklahoma City outscored Chicago 31-19 in the fourth quarter, overcoming a six-point deficit.

"That's winning time, fourth quarter," Durant said. "In the fourth quarter we really turned it up a lot. But if you want to be a really good team you've got to do that from the beginning of the game."

Serge Ibaka scored 15 of his 21 points in the first half, and had a team-high nine rebounds for the Thunder, who beat the Bulls for the third time in their last four games at Chicago. Russell Westbrook finished with 16 points and 12 assists.

"I told (Durant) be aggressive, just be aggressive, especially in the fourth quarter," Westbrook said. "It was his time. Everybody knows that's his time. He took his time and got the shots he needed."

Luol Deng led the Bulls with 27 points, and Richard Hamilton added 20 points and eight rebounds. Joakim Noah had nine points, 13 rebounds and a team-high six assists.

"Overall, I thought we played hard but we turned the ball over a lot," Noah said. "(Durant) hit some really tough shots."

Hamilton made a tying jumper with 2:52 to play, but then Durant took over, making a floater from the top of the key over Deng to keep the Bulls at bay.

"I was on him," Deng said. "He's 6-9 (6-foot-9). A great player. Really tough shot."

While Durant came up with some clutch baskets at one end, the Bulls had no one to answer with star point guard Derrick Rose sidelined with a knee injury that will keep him out of action into the new year.

"Derrick Rose is an unbelievable player, don't get me wrong. He is Chicago," Durant said. "But those guys are great complements to him. Once one of your best players is out, guys got to step up and that's what they've been doing ever since he's been out."

The teams combined for 43 turnovers. The 21 miscues by the Bulls were a hot topic after the game.

"We have to sustain our defense and take care of the ball," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We did not sustain our effort and we need to have low turnovers."

Durant was passive for much of the game and didn't attempt a free throw until the closing seconds. He has had just one game without a free-throw attempt since the start of the 2010-11 season.

"I like Kevin to be a playmaker," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "That is what separates great players from good ones. The 19 shots like tonight are where I like him to be."

The Thunder put together a 7-0 to grab the lead with 8:34 to play. Nick Collison capped the surge with a layup off a pass from Eric Maynor.

Deng snapped the run with his third 3-pointer of the game. Deng entered the contest 1 for 11 from behind the arc. Chicago ranked last in the league in 3-point makes, attempts and percentage, but hit a season-high five 3s in the game.

"Lu provides whatever you need," Thibodeau said. "If you need him to score more, he can do that."

The Thunder responded a six-point run, taking a five-point lead after Ibaka blocked a Deng shot from behind, igniting a fast break and Thabo Sefolosha's layup.

"They are hard to guard," Thibodeau said. "They made some tough plays and closed it out."

Kirk Hinrich scored seven points to lead a third-quarter charge for the Bulls, hitting his second 3-pointer of the game and reaching double figures in scoring for the first time this season. Chicago led 72-66 entering the final period.

The Bulls jumped to an early eight-point lead, but the Thunder closed the opening period with a 9-2 run to tie the game. Durant scored the last six points of the quarter on two dunks and a jump shot.

Ibaka scored 11 points on 5-for-9 shooting in the opening quarter and increased that to 15 by the half, when the Thunder led 48-47.

Jimmy Butler helped Chicago stay close the second quarter, putting up six points, three rebounds and three assists in the period, while playing solid defense on fellow reserve Kevin Martin, who scored 15 points for the Thunder.

Hinrich finished with 12 points.

NOTES: It was a season-high point total for Durant, who entered averaging 20.8 points after scoring a league-best 28.0 points per game last season. Durant had scored at least 25 points in his last seven games against Chicago, but his high in Oklahoma City's first four games was just 23. . The Bulls entered second in the league in defensive points allowed per possession. Chicago hadn't allowed a team to score more than 93 points in any of its first four games. . The teams combined to hit 36 of 39 free throws. It was just the fifth time both the Bulls and their opponent shot at least 88.9 percent from the line since the 1996-97 season.

Thousands flee Syria in exodus, millions more need aid

ANKARA/DOHA (Reuters) - Thousands of Syrians fled their country on Friday in one of the biggest refugee exoduses of the 20-month civil war after rebels seized a border town, and the United Nations warned that millions more still in Syria will need help as winter sets in.

In Qatar, the main opposition group outside Syria elected a new leader. However, it will start talks on Saturday with other factions, including representatives of rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad's forces, on forming a wider body that hopes to gain international recognition as a government-in-waiting.

The U.N. said 11,000 refugees had fled in 24 hours, mostly to Turkey. The influx caused alarm in Ankara, which is worried about its ability to cope with such large numbers and has pushed hard, so far without success, for a buffer zone to be set up inside Syria where refugees could be housed.

Rebels overran the frontier town of Ras al-Ain late on Thursday, continuing a drive that has already seen them push Assad's troops from much of the north and seize several crossing points, a rebel commander and opposition sources said.

"The crossing is important because it opens another line to Turkey, where we can send the wounded and get supplies," said Khaled al-Walid, a commander in the Raqqa rebel division.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK-based group that compiles opposition activist reports, said at least 20 members of the Syrian security forces were killed when rebel fighters attacked a security headquarters in Ras al-Ain.

Thousands of residents poured out of the Arab and Kurd town, in the northeastern oil-producing province of Hasaka, 600 km (375 miles) from Damascus.

The Syrian National Council, the main opposition body outside the country, elected veteran activist George Sabra as its new head in Doha on Friday.

Sabra, a Christian, takes over a body that is under heavy criticism from international allies for being ineffective in the fight against Assad and for being riven by personal disputes.

Sabra appealed for arms to fight Assad's forces. "We need only one thing to support our right to survive and to protect ourselves: we need weapons, we need weapons," he told reporters.

Qatar, the United States and other powers are pressing the fractious Syrian opposition groups to come together and the SNC has agreed to open unity talks, although it fears its influence will be diluted in any new body.

Western countries and Syria's neighbors fear that hardline Islamist groups close to al Qaeda are growing in influence among rebels on the ground in Syria.

An outline agreement could see the SNC and other opposition figures agree on a 60-member political assembly, mirroring the Transitional National Council in Libya, which united opposition to Muammar Gaddafi last year and took power when he fell.

In Geneva, a senior U.N. official highlighted the plight of Syrians still in the country. An estimated four million people would need humanitarian aid by early next year when the country is in the grip of winter, up from 2.5 million now, said John Ging, director of operations at the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

"Every day our humanitarian colleagues on the ground are engaging with people who are ever more desperate, ever more fearful for their lives and for the lives of their families because of this conflict," Ging told a news conference. "Since this crisis has begun we have not been able to keep pace with the increasing need."

The latest flight of refugees raised the total recorded by the U.N. to over 408,000 in Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and North Africa.

TURKEY HITS OUT

Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan hit out at world powers on the U.N. Security Council over their inaction.

"It is very strange. There are currently atrocities being committed in Syria and these atrocities are being directed by a state leader," he said. "How far will this go? When will the permanent members of the Security Council take responsibility?"

Turkey has responded in kind to mortar shells hitting its soil from fighting in Syria and is discussing with NATO allies whether to deploy Patriot air defense missiles on the border.

The Turkish state-run Anatolian news agency reported that 26 Syrian military officers had also arrived in Turkey with their families overnight in what it called the biggest mass desertion of senior soldiers from Assad's forces in months.

Advancing rebels fired mortars at the presidential palace in Damascus this week. Residents in the capital said security was being beefed up there. Assad told Russia Today television on Thursday he would "live and die in Syria", echoing words of other Arab leaders before they lost power last year.

In the last three months, the mainly Sunni Muslim Arab rebels have captured outposts on the Turkish border, moving towards the northeastern heartland of Syria's one million Kurds, many of whom have tried to stay clear of violence.

The Kurdish Council, a coalition of Kurdish parties opposed to Assad, called on rebels to pull their fighters out of Ras al-Ain, saying the clashes and fear of Syrian bombardment had prompted most of its 50,000 residents to flee.

How selection of China's new leadership works

China's communist elite are meeting to install a new generation of leaders in a process that is part public show and part backroom politicking.

At the center of the spectacle is the Communist Party congress, a gathering held once every five years that is the 18th such event in the party's history. The congress is more interlude than climax. Important decisions are made by current and retired leaders, some of whom are not even on the congress delegates' roster, in bargaining that began years ago and has largely been already resolved.

Here's a look at how it works:

THE DELEGATES

Selecting delegates to the congress began months ago, with recommendations made by the party's 82 million members, which are then vetted, winnowed and voted on twice. In practice, the selection is controlled by the party's personnel division, giving the leadership room to make sure the powerful and their key proteges are included. President Hu Jintao, who will retire as party general secretary, is a delegate from Jiangsu province, where he grew up but has not lived for four decades. Most of the 2,268 delegates are chosen to show that the congress is broadly representative. Only the opinions of a small subset matter. One power-broker, retired President Jiang Zemin, is a specially invited delegate, a sign of his continuing influence in the leadership bargaining.

THE CONGRESS

Held over seven days, the congress selects the Central Committee, the party's policy-setting body. The most recent committee had 370 people, comprised of full members and non-voting alternates drawn from the upper echelons of the party, government and military. The congress also names the party's internal watchdog agency. Though the powerful hold sway in determining the outcome, there is room for dissent on the margins. Candidates outnumber seats by a tiny percentage. Vice President Xi Jinping, who is expected to replace Hu as party chief, barely made it into the committee in 1997 in what was seen as a vote against nepotism. His father was a patriarch of the revolution. This time rank-and-file delegates have been told to "maintain unity" with the leadership.

THE LEADERSHIP

After the congress ends, the Central Committee meets to select a Politburo, roughly 25 members, and from that group, the Politburo Standing Committee, the apex of power. The current standing committee has nine members, though party-connected academics say that may be whittled to seven this time. Two members are considered shoo-ins: Xi and Vice Premier Li Keqiang, who is expected to be named premier. The Central Committee also appoints the party commission that oversees the military. A critical question is whether Hu will stay as military commission head. His predecessor, Jiang, did so, hanging on for more than two years and casting a shadow over Hu's efforts to consolidate power.

THE BACKSTORY

Choosing the new leaders involves fractious bargaining that attempts to balance out factions and interest groups in the party. Two of the presumed next leaders, Xi and Li, were anointed five years ago, inducted into Hu's leadership to provide continuity. Xi is seen as ex-president Jiang's man; Li as Hu's. Deciding the rest of the lineup has seen unexpectedly sharp-elbowed jostling this year. Bo Xilai, a populist politician seen as a rising star, was cashiered after an aide disclosed that his wife murdered a British businessman. He awaits prosecution, and deciding his fate divided the leadership. A Hu ally was also sidelined after his son died in a Ferrari crash, weakening Hu. How weak will be apparent by counting his allies in the new leadership.

HIDDEN RULES

China, like most communist governments, has a history of violent, unpredictable leadership successions. One of revolutionary leader Mao Zedong's named successors died in an alleged failed coup. Party leaders have instituted informal age and term limits to smooth out power transfers. Party chiefs are limited to two five-year terms, while senior leaders 68 years or older at the time of a congress are considered too old to serve in a new leadership. Jiang's stepping aside for Hu in 2002 was the first orderly succession since the party came to power in 1949.

Would tea party accept a Bill Clinton-brokered deal with Obama?

Chastened by Obama?s win, Republicans are taking a hard look at the impact of the tea party wing on the party brand. The real story may be whether that makes the GOP more amenable to a deal.

By Patrik Jonsson,?Staff Writer / November 7, 2012

Following the decisive victory by the man they vowed three-and-a-half years ago to pry out of the White House, the antigovernment tea party movement found itself reassessing its role within a fractured Republican Party that faced broad electoral disappointments on Election Day.

President Obama?s reelection represents the fifth time in the last six presidential cycles the Republican candidate has failed to win the popular vote. The GOP is now in full soul-searching mode, with the tea party especially facing criticism for its social and fiscal issue-driven co-opting of the Republican national agenda to which all contenders, including Mitt Romney, had to kneel during the primaries.

?In a lot of ways, the tea party movement was repudiated in the election,? says Joshua Dyck, a University of Massachusetts-Lowell political science professor and co-director of the Center for Public Opinion. ?Part of the problem is that the tea party has had a hard time figuring out what it?s all about. Is it about Sarah Palin [social] conservatism or is the tea party about budget conservatism??

Yet tea party activists across the US also awoke Wednesday with the knowledge that their small government agenda still wields significant clout in the House, through which Obama must take any and all plans designed to raise taxes and slash a runaway deficit and mounting national debt.

Indeed, tea party activists ? whose agenda has the approval of about a third of Americans ? began quickly to sort through the electoral ashes, calibrating new ways to lead the GOP and achieve its chief goal ? saving the republic from a looming calamity of fiscal profligacy.

?Defeat does not weaken the tea party,? says Brigitte Nacos, a political scientist at Columbia University who studies the GOP?s tea party splinter coalition. ?The real topic is the tea party now, and it?s not only Republicans that have to deal with it, but also the president has to now deal with it.?

Yet given the country?s vote Tuesday, at least one tea party blogger suggested that studied compromise may have to replace the line-in-the-sand absolutism that left last year?s negotiations on the debt ceiling in bitter shambles and helped turn American opinion against the movement.

One suggestion floated by tea party members to break the fiscal gridlock would be to craft a spending deal similar to that struck by President Bill Clinton in 1997 ? raising marginal tax rates across the board while slashing deficit spending. The tack, experts say, might allow a term-limited Obama to strike a substantial and meaningful across-the-aisle legislative deal to avoid potentially plunging the US into another recession.

Political scientists and tea party activists also suggested that such a deal could actually be brokered by the former president, as Professor Nocas says has been discussed, especially given Mr. Clinton?s 11th hour role on the Obama campaign trail.

?I definitely think it would behoove Obama to put Bill Clinton in charge of outreach, because Barack Obama frankly doesn?t know how to make a deal on the Hill,? says Scott Boston, a St. Louis-based tea party activist and blogger.

?The fact is, Bill Clinton?s budget was $1.2 trillion smaller than Obama?s budget, so, given that, though I?m not for higher taxes, I?m willing to trade a higher tax rate in return for $1.2 trillion in spending cuts,? Mr. Boston says. ?Either way, we need to talk about the Clinton philosophy towards making the country go again, which was, ?I?ll meet you on tax side if you meet on spending side.? ?

?If they want to put that ?97 budget deal on the table, that sounds attractive to me,? says Matt Kibbe, the CEO of the anti-tax group Freedom Works and coauthor of? ?Give Us Liberty: A tea party manifesto.?

Help page provides further evidence for Google Wallet card

Android CentralScreenshots from a leaked Google Wallet app emerged last week, suggesting that Google Wallet may be headed to your real, actual wallet in the form of a physical payment card. This card, it seems, might be linked to your Google Wallet account, and as such, your associated payment cards.

Today further evidence has emerged suggesting the Google Wallet card might soon become a reality. The Google Wallet help page was briefly updated with references to the card and devices which will be compatible with it.

There's still no info as to when this card might be arriving, or which countries it'll be available in (though U.S.-only is a good bet). But the fact that help pages are being prepared suggest the launch might occur sooner rather than later.

Update: Seems all references to the Google Wallet card on the page in question have been pulled.
